Description
Cranberry is most commonly used for the natural prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Bacteria from the large intestine, such as E. coli, can sometimes travel from the rectal area to the urethra. From there, bacteria can travel up to the bladder. Without treatment the UTI could continue through the urinary tract and infect the kidneys. Women have shorter urethras than men making it easier for infections.
American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) was historically used by North American Indians to treat UTIs.
Both anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins (PAC) are tannins (stable polyphenols) and found only in cranberries. They function as a natural plant defense system against microbes.
Microbe – a microorganism, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation.
